Our cultural tours provide authentic experiences of modern Mayan and Garifuna daily life, as well as access to spectacular ancient Mayan archaeology. We group our tours under Culture, Nature, and Adventure, though most encompass elements of all three. Full-day trips can easily combine two or three different tours.
Immerse Yourself in Mayan Culture
Toledo is the heartland of cacao production in Belize, and the traditional Kek’chi Maya lifestyle is still vibrant in our surrounding villages. We offer interactive home visits that provide a glimpse into a world deeply connected to the forest.
Mayan Chocolate Making
Visit the only Maya chocolatier in Toledo. This tour includes a walk through the cacao grove and a hands-on demonstration of traditional chocolate making. Lunch options often feature their signature mole sauce (vegetarian options available).
The Living Maya Experience
Located in Big Falls, this interactive cultural visit showcases a Mayan home as it functioned fifty years ago. Guests learn how the Kek’chi Maya utilized the forest for food, furniture, and medicine, and help prepare and share a traditional vegetarian meal with the Cal family.

Our cultural experiences include visits to significant ancient Mayan archaeological sites, both conveniently located within 20 minutes of Tanager Rainforest Lodge.
Nim Li Punit Maya Site
Situated atop a hill with views stretching to the coastal forest and the Port Honduras Marine Reserve. The visitor center houses the finest collection of Mayan stelae in Belize, recounting the history of war and conquest in the region.
Lubaantun Maya Site
A Late Classic site that flourished between 700-900 AD. Lubaantun is renowned for its distinctive rounded masonry techniques, the discovery of clay whistles (ocarinas), and famously, the unearthing of the Mitchell-Hedges Crystal Skull in 1924.
